Island bike riding

I've lived in Hatteras island for three years. Lot's of locals commute by bike, because they don't own cars. The relaxing energy of the island got me to ride with flip flops, instead of my standard cycling shoes. I thought that was cool, but the locals ride barefoot....yes barefoot. They are the coolest, hippest, toughest people I know. Once I tried barefoot riding, it didn't work out. Does anyone outside of Hatteras do this? Please share the long term risks & effects.
