How not to break a bicycle chain

Yesterday I'm working out with a kid that has some bicycle chain problems. He tells me he purchased a chain tool, and removed the pin, and was unable to reinstall it. I asked if he completely removed the pin....he said yes. I explained that is not the proper technique.

To properly break a chain the pin needs to be pushed through three faces of the chain. It must stay in the fourth, additionally it needs to have some contact with the third face....to make sure the pin will go through in a straight line. Otherwise there could be a bending & flexing force that pushes the pin at the wrong angle. Possibly comprising the pin & link.
