About Our Folding Bikes
Downtube was established in March of 1996 by Yan Lyansky, Ph.D. Starting as a bicycle resource center we have turned into one of the largest folding bike designers & manufacturers. Our goal is to make the most comfortable bikes on the market. We start with suspension ususally front or rear, sometimes full suspension. We add features that allow a custom fit including a height adjustable and angle adjustable stem, adjustable preload shocks, bar ends, removable faceplate stem, replaceable chainring, and amazingly comfortable tires. In addition we price most models between $300-$550.
The Downtube VI (03/04 model), VIII (05 model), VIIIFS (05 full suspension),mini (07), IX (06/07 model), and IXFS (06/07 model) bikes were designed by Dr. Yan Lyansky. Dr. Yan is an avid cyclist who has biked across the country twice. He was an expert level mountain bike racer and an active member of the cycling community for over 20 years, promoting Bikes Belong, Rails to Trails, and NBDA. In 1996 Dr. Yan started the Downtube online Bicycle Resource center. In 2003 he designed our first folding bicycle, the Downtube VI. It was an affordable, durable bike which was an amazing value. In 2005 we introduced the VIII, and VIIIFS aluminum bikes. They became instant best sellers. Our customers understand and appreciate our low cost, high value business model. We have several customers (non dealers) that have purchased 5 or more bikes. Our base models are comparable to competitors $550 bikes. How do we do it? We design/test/import/distribute and retail our bikes direct to the end customer. This allows us to sell for 60-70% less than everyone else. Our growth has been dramatic, and we plan to continue selling great bikes for huge discounts long into the future. Our customers were so happy they helped us achieve the most popular thread at www.bikeforums.net in the folding bike section ( over 1,400 posts and 100,000 page views ). Most have given praise for our revolutionary bikes and low price approach. Please read for yourself at http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=221 our main thread is usually at or near the top.
In 2007 Dr. Yan taught at ECU ( East Carolina University ) in Greenville, NC not far from the Outer Banks, another amazing location to test our products. In 2009 he moved to the Bahamas and became a faculty member at the College of the Bahamas. In 2013 he moved back to Greensboro, NC to teach. Our 2014 lineup is our strongest yet with major frame and component upgrades....can't wait until mid 2014 to introduce our first belt drive model.
