New Generation of Novas in some markets? (2 replies)

Recently I've noticed (from web photos) that some of the overseas (non U.S.) Novas have a vertical lever for the main frame hinge, such as in this photo:

I understand that the Novas are selling much faster overseas than in the U.S. market, so I'm wondering if these other locales have gone through their original shipments of Novas and are now on to successive shipments of bikes that have come with some slight updates (ie vertical frame hinge lever).

If anyone can shed some light on this topic, I would be greatly appreciative.

Hi,
I have a IXFS. The low end works me and the hills I ride. But on flats and downhills I feel underpowered. I would like to add a 56t chainring, in addition to the 48t chainring in the front. And add a shimano ultegra front derailleur for shifting. My hope is I that I can use the stock crankset.
The question I have is, does anyone know what 5 bolt pattern chainring to look for. It is my understanding that chainrings come in different bolt circle diameters.

I just received the 9 speed front suspension and love it. I've already done some 50 mile rides and it rides perfectly.

My girlfriend wants one too but the stem/bar is too high for her. She's only 5'3" and is used to a more agressive riding style. I've turned the bar downward but it's not enough. Is there anyway to reduce the stem height or what alternative bars could she use that wouldn't compromise the folding? I note that the handlebars still have about 2" inches of potential further travel downward but seem to be blocked before coming down all the way.

Any ideas? Many thanks.
My girlfriend and I are about to head out on a fairly long voyage on our sailboat. I've been shopping around for a folding bike for a while now, and stumbled upon Downtube somehow. We have limited space on the boat, so the smaller the bike package the better. I noticed the Downtube Mini, but also noticed it is no longer for sale. Whats the deal?
Anyways - I'm hoping someone out there has one they no longer want. Shoot me a PM and I will buy it...

Hello,

I have owned a IXFS for a few years now. I have just sold it to somebody I work with. The issue is that, at the folding point at both the handlebar stem & frame there seems to be a lot of play. This is to the point that it actually feels unsafe.
When the QR is engaged on the handlebar stem there is about 2-3 cm of movement from the handlebar (backwards & forwards motion, nothing side to side). I cannot see a way to tighten this as the bolt holding the handlebar stem to the frame is rounded at both ends.
The play in the frame isn't noticable when riding, but it seems to lift & seperate if it was lifted at the QR point.
Hope this makes sense. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ok so I have been riding my 9FS for a couple of weeks now and really like it. This is the first bike I have ever owned with suspension and it really helps out even though I only ride on roads. I am planning a future ride down the east coast of the United States. I have seen the ONE picture of a touring setup with a downtube. My question is, are there any rear racks that will fit on the 9FS painlessly?

I have just bought a nova downtube 7 speeds.
I would like to use a front basket on the steering.
I would like to have one you can snap on; and snap off.
I am looing into two models from Amazon.com
Biria Bycycle basket with Bracket Black - Front quick release button, removable, wire mesh bycycle basket $19.49 (First Choice)
"Bell quick release Handlebar basket $15.99" (Second Choice)
If you have other similar ones to suggest; please let me know.

My concern is when the piece is mounted on my steering; I am afraid it can block the folding capabilities. I am actually buying the bike bag, so I can take the bike into the grocery store, bus and metro.

Also I don't know what to do with fenders and racks. I would like to have fitting fenders along the wheels. Where can I find them?

I am greatful for any help!
Thank You!

We're about the hit the road in and RV, and I don't think my current bike will handle the non-paved roads found in some campgrounds, loose sand, dirt, gravel. While looking at a lot of different off-road type bikes, I've found folding bikes. They'd be perfect for RV use, what with the lack of storage space. I really like what Downtube offers.

I guess my question is, is full suspension needed, and if so, why? Does the Front suspension only model give better road performance and why is it more expensive? I'd think rear suspension would add cost. I've been riding my whole life, but I am getting older, mid 50's, and plan to ride mainly paved roads, from campground to local stores, etc, but I want to be able ride around the non-paved campground roads also. I'm leaning toward the 9 silver, but the increased price over the 9FS bugs me abit.

I'm currently on a "decent at the time" '90's era road bike. Will I be extremely disappointed in one of these? I'm just looking for a easy, relaxed ride.

Anyone's thoughts would be appreciated.

I can't seem to figure this out, so if anyone can tell me how to secure the seatpost and where these little parts go I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi, I have a 2008 9 speed FS bike and the rear shock is very squeaky and I can no longer adjust it because the adjustment nut has somehow completely seized, so I've given up on fixing it. I'm finding it pretty much impossible, however, to find a replacement shock. Of the slim results that I've found on google and ebay, all of them seem to be too long ( the closest I've found is about 6 inches/160 mm ), and the shock seems to be about 4 inches/101mm from eye to eye. Does anyone know a place that sells these? It seems crazy that they'd be so hard to find since I could swear I see shocks of this size on bikes all the time.

Hi all:

I've been enjoying my Downtube Nova for almost a year now (6 solid months of commuting 5x a week and getting back into it now that winter's over).

I'm finding that I'd like a bit more range with my gearing: I've got a few big hills where a bit less work in the low gears (1 and 2) would be appreciated, but I've also got some nice flat straights where top gears (6 and 7) have me pedaling like mad.

So, to sum up, I'd like to have more range on both the low and high ends. Would swapping out the freewheel do the trick? Would I have to swap out the crank arm too? Any suggestions as to specific brands / parts? I love the fact that this has been a cheap, efficient, and fun means of conveyance; I don't want to spend the same amount I paid for the bike just to eke out that last bit of performance.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I bough a 9 front suspension about a month ago. I just noticed it does not have a front reflector. Per the bike shop and few online sites, a front reflector is required by law. I've checked about five area shops and none have reflectors in stock. They do have reflective stickers, but I don't want to go that route. Where have you been buying your reflectors?

UPDATE: My bike just got here today (Apr 7) nearly a week late. Looking at the Bill of Lading it seems Dr. Yan shipped a new bike on the 5th because the first was lost. It would have been nice to be notified so I wouldn't have been left hanging... So my original complains still stand, but I'm happy I was taken care of in the long run.

----

Hopefully I can reply to this post shortly with some good news... I was looking forward to owning a DownTube folding bike.

I'm trying to give DownTube the benefit of the doubt, but I ordered my Nova back on Mar 27 and got an email saying it was shipped first thing Mar 28, it's well over a week later and I still haven't gotten my bike... I'm sure it's an isolated incident but I'm not too happy.

First; I never got my tracking number so after a few days I tried to email Dr. Yan to get the number and I never heard back...

After waiting a week from "shipment" (Mon April 4) I called to see what was taking so long, only to get one of his little kids on the line telling me their mom and dad were not there... I got a call back from Dr. Yan later in the day. He sounded confused, and when he checked my order he said UPS had "delivered" my bike on April 1 but the addresses didn't match-up. He then told me he'd get back to me once he knew what was going-on. I still didn't get a tracking number.

I got an email from Dr. Yan later Monday night saying he'd have information for me early Tues. This put me at ease because it sounded as if he was going to take care of it quickly.

It is now late Weds and I haven't heard from Dr. Yan since the email Monday night... It's been over 48 hours since I spoke with him on the phone.

I understand mistakes happen and DownTube is a small business... I can deal with that, but I'm out $331.50, have no bike 10 days later, and I'm not pleased about being left totally in the dark about how and when this will be dealt with. I don't see why he doesn't just claim insurance on the lost bike and ship me a new one ASAP...

I'm keeping track of this on my blog too: [blog.androidworkshop.com]
