Will the front suspension reduce efficiency? How do you compare a DT model with Dahon Speed P8? Which is the fastest DT model?

We are impressed with the DownTube line of folding bicycles and are seriously considering a purchase later this year. We have a travel trailer and are looking for a pair of folding bikes that would be easily packed. Our intention is using the bikes for recreation commuting, exploring and some trail riding. We do not intend to be serious mountain bikers, but want some off road capability for when we are camping. We are looking at the Downtube 8FH (8 speed full suspension) folding bike as it has the suspension that we think we would like...it appears to be relatively maintenance free and easy to operate in all kinds of conditions. We are in our early fifties (5'3", 135#; and 5'10", 180#) and we plan on traveling with bikes and trailer. We are looking for advice on what models we should look at and the options we should consider that might optimize our selection.

After removing the cranks you must remove the lockring with a lockring removal tool.
I really want a folding bike for a lot of reasons, i.e. I live in a second story apartment, not a whole lot of room to store a bike, I want to be able to take it with me in case I decide a bike ride is a good idea.

I'm also planning on doing a 400 mile bike ride this summer following the Erie Canal. I know 2/3 of it is on the canal way but that means it could be a trail or paved. The other third is on the road.

When I do get my new bike it'll be under the same conditions as the actual trip for training purposes.

I've never really been much into bikes other than it gets me from point a to point b.
Thanks for the help!

I'm wondering about variations in frame geometries / riding position for the current models. I'm looking to emulate a road bike position as much as possible (out of habit and for wind resistance) -- any model support that best?

It *looks* like the 8HN is better for this than the 9NS (based just on eyeballing the jpegs on the site...). (I'm by far mostly interested in non-suspension.)

Along those lines, any known problems (folding glitches or otherwise) with using time trial handlebars on these bikes? (Such as Nashbar's -- http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=92&subcategory=1050&brand=&sku=8448&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Shop%20by%20Subcat%3A%20Road%20Handlebars)

[Tech Talk] folding stem section question

Hello - I'm a new owner of a 9 front suspension bike. I know enough about bike repair and basic re-builds, but I am not as familiar with the stem folder section on the DT. Specifically, when I have it set up and I am sitting on the bike, there seems to be play or flex in the area of the QR clamp and it makes a slight creaking noise if I rock back and forth. It seems like the stem extension is a little weak or moves more than it should, so that I am worried about riding and fatiguing this section. How tight should one tighten the clamp? Is some amount of flex here OK, or not? Maybe I am missing something that I didn't get from reading the instructions and going through the website info here. THanks in advance for any suggestions.

Unfortunately sales have always been low, and warehouse costs have always been very very very high. Currently I am having issues keeping stock in the USA. We just ran out of 9NS bikes, very low on 8FH & 9FS's. I know that you have close-out bikes for sale, but I'm damned if I can find a site for them! I'm considering starting an online bike business here, and I might be interested in carrying the Mini in particular, or being the UK importer/dealer. I don't of course know what that might entail in terms of financial risk, and I'm planning to start small, but your bikes would fit my profile. I can't imagine how the Mini in particular would be anything less than a great seller here if marketed well - Bromptons and Mercs sell piles at high prices, and with lower specs.
I think I will also eventually put a real large ring on in place of the 48, just added the 39 as a quick fix for loaded touring. Am also considering getting a really small chainring and bolting it with pacers to the inner holes on cranks, not the regular bolt holes which limit you to a 38 or more tooth ring. Anyone have the expertise to say if that would be doable and safe? Would be cool to have a 24 or 22 tooth and a 54 tooth, awesome range. Of course must shift by hand and never use several of the extreme cross gears.

Also a front rack by Nashbar for $7.99 attaches to v brake bosses. And my service dog Rosie showing off the new touring folder all ready to go, now if spring would just come we'll be off.
